Removing Soot Damage – Londonderry, NH 03053

Written by jsolloway on . Posted in , , .

With the winter months quickly approaching, Londonderry, New Hampshire (NH) residents are preparing for the chilly temperatures by draining sprinkler systems and hoses, storing away lawn decorations and prepping heating systems for their upcoming use. To keep warm during the winter months, many NH residents have woodstoves in their homes that are equipped with cords of wood to help maintain a steady indoor temperature. Although woodstoves are a great way to heat a home, did you know that they can produce a messy soot-build up that can damage nearby furniture and personal items? Winters in NH can be overwhelming. Firing up the woodstove for the season shouldn’t be. Don’t let removing soot damage become a problem for you this winter.

What Is Soot?

Have you ever seen black, dust-like or flaky spots on woodstove glass? How about on the top of the woodstove or on items surrounding the woodstove? These black, dust-like or flaky spots are actually carbon particles that have not fully combusted in the woodstove during the burning of wood, coal or other fuels. Since soot can contain harmful chemicals and acids, it is essential that homeowners perform routine maintenance and cleaning on their woodstove to help prevent soot damage and even an unexpected fire.

Preventing Soot Accumulation

Removing soot damage from your wood stove is important, but there are several preventative maintenance tasks that should be implemented as well. To assist in preventing your home or woodstove from displaying those unsightly soot flakes, consider the following routine tasks that you can perform:

  • Always burn seasoned wood, which reduces the amount of incomplete combustible particles from the wood.
  • Try positioning wood, or other materials used for burning, closer to the woodstove glass. By keeping the flammable material close to the glass, it reduces the amount of soot build-up and keeps the flames at a higher temperature.
  • Avoid burning wood that contains sap, as sap can cause damage to the woodstove and chimney.
  • Ensure there is a sufficient venting system to the woodstove, which allows oxygen to adequately flow through the unit.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on the woodstove and chimney to avoid soot build-up and damage to the unit and chimney.

All I have to say is WOW and FANTASTIC. I just got done building out my new professional office with Soil-Away’s construction division and they went ABOVE and BEYOND. Scott and Mike, the carpenters are skilled artisans. The project got done on time and the project came in on budget! The finished results have been blowing people away. Much better than I could have anticipated. Anyone is welcome to come to our office, Bright Light Chiropractic in Hooksett to check out the fine work they did. Simply can’t sing enough praises for them. Sorry that the picture doesn’t do the job justice. Thank you Jack and your team. -Dr. Jay

Since day one, I’ve known the owner, Jack, to be a hard-working and selfless leader. Through the efforts of him and his team, he was able to restore my flooded restaurant to tip-top shape. I was amazed with Jack’s orderliness throughout the entire process. Jack has proven to me that he is trustworthy, as both a friend and an individual in the work environment.

Highly recommend Soil-Away. A pipe in our upstairs bathroom gave and sent water down through a wall for at least a day before we noticed water dripping through our kitchen ceiling. Our insurance put us in touch with Soil-Away and they were at our house the next morning to assess the damage and dry things out. Joe, Ray and Tom were phenomenal to work with. They explained every part of the process to us and were very professional and friendly. If you have to deal with similar issues call Soil-Away, you won’t regret it.
