How Do I Recover from Storm Damage?

Written by jsolloway on . Posted in , , .

It isn’t unusual for a winter storm to cause significant damage to your home or business.  Being proactive to act quickly can go a long way to minimizing the damage.  In many cases, particularly when flooding is involved, fast action can make a big difference.   A professional restoration and rebuild company, like Soil-Away, can help to make the recovery process as painless and quick as possible.  This can go a long way to allowing you to once again resume everyday life.

During a Storm, Be on the Lookout for Damage

Storms, with excessive rain, snow and ice and accompanying high winds can quickly leave a trail of damage behind.  Throughout the storm you should continuously assess the property to check for damage.  One of the areas of concern that you should check is the roof, looking for any missing or loose shingles.  You should also check the basement and entryways for flooding.  Damage to gutters and downspouts are also quite common after storm damage.

If you find water entering the home through a door or the foundation or a leaking roof, do your best to stop the flow of water immediately. This may include sandbagging the area where water is entering the building or placing out buckets to prevent a roof leak from damaging the area.  Once the storm has passed, be sure to give your property a thorough inspection to make sure there is no additional damage.

Assessing the Damage and Contacting Your Insurance Company

After the storm has passed, you can more carefully and thoroughly check for damage.  If your property has been damaged by the storm, be sure to contact your insurance company to begin the process of filing a claim for your property.  It is wise to start documenting the damage with photographs on your own.

Many times, the insurance company will send an adjuster to determine the extent of the damage and determine the cost to repair the property.  Once you get the go-ahead from the insurance company, you can begin the process of making repairs.  A restoration company, skilled in repairing storm damage, can help to put your property back together.

Soil-Away has been helping countless property owners after winter storms, making the repairs needed to recover.  Contact Soil-Away at 603-641-6555 if your property is damaged by a natural disaster.
