Taking Steps to Prevent Water from Damaging Your Electronics

Written by jsolloway on . Posted in , , , .

A flood in your home or business is never a good thing, but the damage that the water can do to your electronics can be irreparable. The best way to protect your electronics from water damage in the future is by taking some proactive steps now.

Back up your data.

One of the most critical things to lose if water damages your electronics is the data. Ensuring that this is regularly backed up can prevent this from ever happening. There are many cloud-based back-up solutions available that will do this automatically.

Elevate electronics.

If water does enter your home or business, keeping your electronics at a safe height can prevent damage. This is as simple as keeping computers, televisions or gaming consoles on a desk or low table. This few feet can make a big difference.

Don’t forget the power strips.

Most power strips are kept on the floor, tucked away out of sight, and used daily without a second thought. If the area floods, the power strip will not only be damaged but all devices plugged in there may also be affected. Just like you should elevate your electronics, placing the power strip on a table or the back of a desk can go a long way to preventing this.

Unplug.

If you are anticipating flooding in your area, unplug your electronics to prevent damage. This includes not only the obvious computers and televisions, but also appliances such as the refrigerator.

Waterproof containers.

If you have electronics in your home or business that are not regularly used but that you would still like to ensure remain in good working order, invest in waterproof containers. Storing these valuables in these containers will ensure that no matter where they are stored, they will be safe from water damage.

Invest in moisture sensors.

As with anything, damage can be minimized in a flood when caught early. Many of today’s smart home systems include moisture sensors. This will send an alert to your phone or tablet if higher than normal moisture levels are detected.
The key to minimizing any type of damage in a flood, whether electronics, other belongings, or the home itself, it to address the situation immediately. The restoration professionals at Soil-Away are available to help when disaster hits, working quickly to remove the water and restore the home and its contents. All I have to say is WOW and FANTASTIC. I just got done building out my new professional office with Soil-Away’s construction division and they went ABOVE and BEYOND. Scott and Mike, the carpenters are skilled artisans. The project got done on time and the project came in on budget! The finished results have been blowing people away. Much better than I could have anticipated. Anyone is welcome to come to our office, Bright Light Chiropractic in Hooksett to check out the fine work they did. Simply can’t sing enough praises for them. Sorry that the picture doesn’t do the job justice. Thank you Jack and your team. -Dr. Jay

Since day one, I’ve known the owner, Jack, to be a hard-working and selfless leader. Through the efforts of him and his team, he was able to restore my flooded restaurant to tip-top shape. I was amazed with Jack’s orderliness throughout the entire process. Jack has proven to me that he is trustworthy, as both a friend and an individual in the work environment.

Highly recommend Soil-Away. A pipe in our upstairs bathroom gave and sent water down through a wall for at least a day before we noticed water dripping through our kitchen ceiling. Our insurance put us in touch with Soil-Away and they were at our house the next morning to assess the damage and dry things out. Joe, Ray and Tom were phenomenal to work with. They explained every part of the process to us and were very professional and friendly. If you have to deal with similar issues call Soil-Away, you won’t regret it.
