Area Rug maintenance

Area rugs can be a beautiful addition to any home or business. It is important to know how to clean and maintain them to protect your investment. These simple tips can keep your rugs looking new for as long as possible.

  • It is okay to vacuum your rugs. Really, it is! If you can, start out by safely turning the rug over (face down) and vacuum with the beater bar turned on. This will help loosen some of the dry particulates often left in the rug from normal vacuuming. If the backing of the rug is damaged to not vacuum it as it may enhance the problem.
  • Now, carefully turn the rug face up and vacuum it. This will help remove much of the dry soil on top. Be very careful not to vacuum too much as this may result in fiber lose in the rug. Also, make sure your vacuum is on the proper height setting to reflect the fiber length of the rug. If the beater bar is set too low the vacuum may become too abrasive. Likewise, if the beater bar is set too high, the vacuuming will be ineffective. Proper vacuuming is the single most helpful way to maintain the beauty of your area rug.
  • Do not vacuum the fringe or tassels on a rug. These often get tangled in the beater bar. They alsocan get pulled out of the rug during the vacuuming process. This can severally damage the rug.
  • When an accident or spill happens, instead of a using a store bought product, reach for Soil-Away’s Spot-Out. Gentle enough on most fabrics, tough enough on most spots. Follow the usage instructions on the label. If your cleaning is not successful, call the Soil-Away team and schedule a service.
Remember to always request your free bottle of spot out upon every cleaning. We will be happy to supply you with one.
  • If your rug gets wet from a flood or other water source it is best to call Soil-Away as quickly as possible to help prevent permanent damage to your area rug.
  • Even with the best routine care, area rugs often need professional cleaning. It is recommended that area rugs get cleaned about every year depending on the amount of traffic and type of soiling that occurs.
